Today we’re lucky enough to share the journey of another Leans, Greens & RDLs member. We are so proud of her amazing results and commitment and are excited to share her interview. Please welcome Lisa Pallone.
How much have you lost?
I’ve lost 50.6 lbs and have 9.4 to go to get to my goal. I’ve spent my entire life struggling with my weight! I had to finally come to grips with the fact that a total change in lifestyle was all that was going to work. No more dieting. I also knew that spinning wasn’t working. Three classes a week for months had done nothing.
How did you do it?
About the time I was thinking all these things, a new nurse came to my department. A marathon runner. I looked at her and thought I could never look like that. Then I found out that she had been heavy in the past! So I figured I would give it a try. I did NOT have high hopes. I’m in my fifties, have asthma, and gave always gotten shin splints. She recommended the Couch to 5K app. I tried it, it was hard, and sometimes I had to repeat the weeks, but I got through it and ran a 5K, which I never thought would be possible.
Another friend on Facebook was frequently posting pictures of herself at a boxing gym. Knowing that just spinning didn’t help me, I thought I should add something to the running. I LOVE the boxing!!! So much fun.
I now run between 3-5 miles three times a week and try to get to the boxing gym twice. I’ve signed up for a half marathon in the fall, so I’m going to start adding distance. 🙂
As far as food goes, I strive to eat healthy, track everything, give myself an occasional treat, and always always burn more than I eat.
What 3 pieces of advice would you give someone tying to lose weight?
My advice is pretty simple:
- Accept that you can’t be “on a diet” then “off a diet”. The goal here is healthy living. I don’t take asthma, hypertension, or high cholesterol medication anymore. Which is really the best part.
- Journal everything. I use Lose It! as you know [editors note: check out our 4 week Lose It! Challenge]. I wear a fitness tracker that links to Lose It! And I have a Bluetooth scale that links as well. Not necessary by any means, but helps me.
- Have a really good support system, and ways to keep you accountable.
You’ve been an active member of our Facebook Group since the beginning (thanks!). What have you found helpful about the group?
I follow the LGR, see other people’s progress, and that helps motivate me. It also gives me a place to be proud in front of people who understand what it took. And I do bets on DietBet.com! It’s a website where you can bet on your weight loss. You have to weigh in on a regular basis and if you don’t make weight, you lose your money! I really hate to lose money so this works well for me. And you can’t cheat, there’s a series of photos that have to be submitted at weigh in time.
Congratulations, Lisa! I can’t say it enough—I’m so proud of you and thankful that you are part of our community!
