I didn’t drink coffee until my husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) took me to Disneyland and introduced me to mochas.
I come from a coffee loving family, so apparently that apple might have fallen farther from the tree, but eventually rolled back to the trunk.
It was a long progression for me — and looked like this:
Coffee with Cream & Sugar
Coffee with Milk & Sugar
Coffee with Milk & Fake Sugar (Sweet & Low then Stevia)
Coffee with Milk
Coffee with Coconut Milk
Cold Brew – Black
I hover between the bottom three nowdays—I drink coconut milk in my coffee at work, but if I’m at a restaurant it’s usually black coffee for me.
Comparative Calories & Costs
|12oz of:||Mocha||Soy Latte||Coffee with Milk & Sugar||Coffee with Coconut Milk||Black Coffee|
Look at how many calories I save now! If you have one 12 oz drink per day the difference between a Mocha everyday and a Coffee with Coconut Milk everyday is 74,460 calories a year — and that is 21.25 pounds per year (3500 calories = 1 pound)! Not to mention $1,080.40. What would you splurge $1,000 on if you were 20 pounds lighter?
How I did it
This was a long progression. I suggest that you look at how much coffee you drink and do 20-30 drinks at each stage. So if you drink a fancy coffee drink every day of the work week you’d be 4 weeks per stage.
Yes, it takes a long time to get there—but it’s worth it and permanent change doesn’t come overnight. Like everything, take one small step. Make it just a little better and stick it out for a while, then take the next small step. I believe that change happens in punctuated equilibrium and is not a constant journey.
Mocha & latte numbers were pulled from Starbucks Nutrition; coffee with 1/2c 2% milk and 2 T sugar; coffee with 1/2c So Delicious Vanilla Coconut milk. Prices based on Starbucks and found here; price for coffee with coconut milk was calculated on a 12oz bag of Charming Beard coffee (40 coffees per bag) and So Delicious Coconut Milk on Amazon (8 coffees per container).

The best local coffee drive-thru is Jarrett’s Java Express — they are so nice there and they have been through every step with me, even making me “less chocolate, less hot, soy mochas”. Here is the owner with a tiny mustache on his real mustache:
